Storms in Northern Europe Knock out Power to over 150,000 homes and Interrupt Road and Aviation Travel

Argyll and Bute in western Scotland had 135 km/h winds, and fallen trees and power wires obstructed roads and train lines nationwide. Storm Boelo, the second of two storms this weekend, disrupted travel and power in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England on Sunday. Flying debris and pounding seas will threaten life during Storm Boelo, according to the Met Office.

Flood warnings and disruptions have affected airports, ferries, railroads, and highways. Power disruptions have hit 82,000 British households, over 60,000 French dwellings, and at least 10,000 German homes. Storm Boelo, pronounced “Boo-Loh,” followed storm Austen, which hit southern England on Friday before moving across northern continental Europe.

Two persons were critically injured Saturday by scaffolding blown away by storm Austen’s winds at an autumn fair in Nastaetten near Frankfurt, German police said. Germany’s DWD forecast stronger winds of up to 100 km/h on Sunday along the northern coast.

High winds and rain were predicted for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. To be safe, certain ferries were cancelled, some Swedish trains were suspended, and some trailers were banned from Denmark’s Great Belt Bridge.
