Spain Train Catastrophe Death toll Increased to 69 as Royal Family Visits Victims

Spain’s Railway Accident Investigation Commission has lowered the death toll from Wednesday’s train collision in Urda to 69, from the 74 fatalities first reported by the country’s transport ministry. The information came after Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited a hospital in Toledo on Thursday afternoon where they met survivors and relatives of fatalities.

Emergency workers greeted the royal couple, who thanked them for their efforts, before talking with injured passengers and victims’ families. There are 15 patients being treated in intensive care and a further eight in general wards at the hospital.

Felipe VI and Letizia, visibly affected, suspended official commitments to come to Toledo and see first-hand the situation of people being treated. The monarch said after the disaster that he was deeply saddened” by the “terrible accident” and conveyed his sympathies to the families and friends of the dead during “such a difficult time.” He also commended the work of emergency personnel.

The Royal Household has cancelled its formal obligations for the next few days as a token of respect. The move comes as three days of national mourning commence on Thursday, including scheduled ceremonies in both Madrid and the Canary Islands.
