Canada has announced counter-tariffs of up to 50% on a variety of US items in response to President Donald Trump’s latest round of charges on Canadian imports last weekend. The Canadian tariffs will apply to almost C$28 billion ($20 billion; £15 billion) of American items, including steel, furniture, fresh tuna, and cotton T-shirts, officials stated on Tuesday.
The list of targeted products is intended to match Canadian commodities attacked by the US. The Canadian tariffs are slated to take effect on September 8. It is the latest escalation since US-Canada trade discussions collapsed late last week, with each side blaming the other of making excessive demands at the last minute.
Canada’s Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that the country’s reaction is in response to the Trump administration’s 50% tariffs on several Canadian exports following the breakdown of trade talks on Friday.”Those tariffs will have serious consequences for Canadian workers, businesses, and communities across the country,” he warned. “Canada must respond.”
Champagne described Canada’s reply as “proportionate” and “strategic”. He also stated that Canada will provide an additional C$7.5 billion to firms and people affected by US tariffs for support programs aimed at reducing job losses and keeping enterprises afloat.
