It is “Realistic” That Armenia will Apply for EU Membership in 2027 or 2028. PM Informs Euronews

It is “realistic” for Armenia to formally apply to join the EU in 2027 or 2028. At the EU Enlargement Summit, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told Euronews that his government will allow Armenians to follow their own course. “We can be practical next year. He stated, “2028 can be realistic.” “We began the process that will lead us to the ultimate decision to submit an application for official EU membership.” Pashinyan declared in front of the national parliament in August that his government would submit an application to join the EU “in the near future.” The action would drag the nation in the South Caucasus away from Russia and toward Brussels.

Yerevan has not yet filed an official application. It is working with the European Commission to liberalise visas, with the goal of finishing the process by 2029. Pashinyan sees joining the EU as a calculated move to safeguard Armenia’s democracy following the 2018 revolution that removed pro-Russian politicians from office. “Democracy is not a question of circumstances for our people. It’s a calculated decision,” he stated. “One of the Republic of Armenia’s primary partners in implementing the democratic reform agenda was the European Union.”

Pashinyan stated, “Our first intention is to create an alternative for the people of Armenia and for the Republic of Armenia because, traditionally, our society and maybe our neighbourhood thought that Armenia had no alternative.” In particular, Russia has threatened to cut off Armenia’s energy supplies in retaliation. According to Pashinyan, his administration wants to broaden its economic and political ties.

“There is always a risk if there is no balance in any relations,” he stated. When questioned about former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s concerns that Armenia would turn into the new Ukraine, he rejected the analogy, emphasising that protecting the nation’s independence was his top priority. “We want to advance and become more independent. And that is a reasonable objective. Pashinyan went on, “Nobody could lessen Armenia’s ambition to be a more autonomous, integrated nation.
