US Midterm Results: Implications for Europe and International Markets of Trump’s Loss

After Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress to Democrats in a vote that became a verdict on his administration, Donald Trump suffered one of the biggest setbacks of his political career. Democrats now hold 220 seats in the House of Representatives, two more than the 218 required for a majority, after gaining 25 seats by 07:40 CET. They defeated the Republicans in seven Senate seats, including those in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, and Maine. Voters were greatly impacted by high prices. In an election-day study, over two-thirds of respondents claimed that Trump’s tariffs had harmed the economy.

“I don’t view it as a hit on me,” the president said, adding that he would accept the findings. Additionally, he posted a photo of a red headgear with the word “VETO” sewn on it to make it obvious that he would utilise his veto to thwart the Democrats’ goal. However, how much can a Democratic Congress actually alter markets and Europe? Most likely not, since Congress is no longer required to approve Trump’s tariffs. The government moved his emergency tariffs under Section 301 of US trade law after the Supreme Court invalidated them in February. By using this method, the president can act without a legislative vote.

Democrats can slow down his selections and hold hearings, but they can’t simply take away that authority. A divided Washington would even encourage the president to rely more on it, according to James Smith, a developed markets economist at the Dutch bank ING.Similar to foreign policy, the president can use unilateral authority over trade without consulting Congress, Smith stated in a note before to the vote. He stated that fresh tariffs on Europe would have a significant impact on US inflation and the Federal Reserve, but he did not rule them out.
