UAE Claims Mystery Drones That Attacked Nuclear Reactor came From Iraq

The UAE said on Tuesday the drones targeting its sole nuclear power plant last week were launched from Iraqi soil, a major escalation by Tehran-backed militants in a battle that has frequently targeted Gulf energy infrastructure.

US officials say Iran-backed militias in Iraq, acting under the cover of the Popular Mobilisation Forces, have attacked US military positions in the nation more than 600 times since the Iran war began. The paramilitary organizations have routinely targeted Gulf governments, prompting condemnation from Baghdad, which has failed to control them.

One of the most active is Kata’ib Hezbollah, a different group from the Lebanese group of the same name, which has been declared a terrorist organisation by the US and has claimed or been related to the assaults.

Iraqi government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi, without mentioning the Emirati Defence Ministry’s allegation, said in a statement that Baghdad “expresses its strong condemnation of the recent drone assaults targeting the UAE.

We also stress the importance of effective regional and international cooperation to prevent any escalation or damage to the stability of the region or any targeting of the security and sovereignty of sisterly and friendly countries,” Al-Awadi said.
