As part of a four-day visit to India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. On Saturday morning, Rubio landed in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), an eastern city, prior to traveling to the capital. Additionally, he is scheduled to visit Agra and Jaipur.
According to US officials, he invited Modi to visit the White House during their meeting. In contrast, the Indian premier stated that the two had engaged in a conversation regarding “topics concerning global and regional peace and security.
The visit coincides with the two nations’ efforts to restructure their economic relationship and amid a global energy crisis that has had a severe impact on India, which was precipitated by the Iran conflict. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that has become a flashpoint since Israel and the United States attacked Iran, has seen a virtual halt in energy shipments.
Iran has employed the effective closure of the strait, which is the conduit for approximately 20% of the world’s crude and natural gas, as a pressure tactic in the precarious peace negotiations with the United States. India has been adversely affected by this, as it imports over 80% of its energy requirements. Almost half of India’s waste.
