Zelenskyy Rejects Merz’s Suggestion and Claims Ukraine Should be Allowed to Join the EU

While German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed making Ukraine a “associate member” with no voting rights, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has maintained that Ukraine should be granted full EU membership. Merz proposed this status for the duration of the protracted discussions prior to full membership, according to a letter to the bloc’s leadership.

Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of his nation’s full EU membership while pointing out that it was defending Europe by thwarting the Russian invasion. There can be no fully-fledged European project without Ukraine, and Ukraine’s presence in the EU must also be complete, with full rights,” Zelenskyy stated in his daily speech.

Under the “associate-membership” plan, Ukraine would not have full voting rights but would be able to participate in bloc summits, have a representative in the European Commission, and receive some EU funding.

Days after the Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine presented a petition to join the EU, and a few months later, it was officially recognized as a candidate. The accession talks began in 2024, but the intricate process typically takes years and entails debates on a variety of challenging, specific topics, from the rule of law to agriculture.
