Nvidia is entering the consumer market with a new processor for personal computers that incorporates AI technologies. This reinvention of the computer is as significant as the reinvention of the phone into what we now call the smartphone,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang remarked as he announced the RTX Spark processor.
Huang made the announcement on Monday at a keynote speech before the start of the Computex technology show in Taipei, Taiwan. Separately, on Sunday, the United States toughened its requirements for selling Nvidia’s most advanced chips to Chinese companies.
The RTX Spark is “a new superchip… for the era of personal AI agents – offering a new class of computer that moves from tool to teammate,” according to Nvidia’s website. It will be incorporated in a new Windows PC range from Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, Asus, and MSI. They will be available in the autumn, with Acer and Gigabyte variants to follow.
The move poses a challenge to well-known PC market giants such as Apple and Intel. According to Gartner, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Apple controlled about 75% of the global PC market in the first three months of this year.
