Senior EU officials praised a deal reached by the US and Iran to end the conflict on Monday, saying Europe was ready to contribute to “a lasting peace. In a post on X, António Costa, president of the European Council representing member states, expressed hope for the end of the costly battle and full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”Weapons must now fall silent,” Costa said, stressing the “European Union is ready to contribute to advancing a comprehensive strategy for long-term peace across the Middle East.”
The US and Iran declared they had struck an agreement to stop the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz, but they gave little clue on the contentious issue of Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Ursula von der Leyen, chief of the European Commission, emphasized that the “priority now is its swift and full implementation,” and urged all parties to preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while implementing a true ceasefire.
