Eight Crew Members are Killed as a B-52 Bomber Explodes at California’s Edwards Air Force Base

The B-52 bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base, northeast of Los Angeles, on Monday morning, killing eight crew members, according to the base. The collision is the deadliest involving a B-52 since 1982. Nine crew members were killed in the incident while conducting test training at Mather Air Force Base outside Sacramento, according to the Associated Press.

The B-52 Stratofortress crashed on Monday while on a regular test run at the distant air station, according to officials. It is now classified as a recovery operation. “It was tragic and unsurvivable,” Colonel James Hayes stated at a press conference.

According to Chief Master Sgt. Joshua T. Skarloken, teams are trying to notify relatives about the deaths over the next few hours. Skarloken stated the crew included military personnel, government civilians, and government contractors. The plane’s maker, Boeing, confirmed that two of its workers were aboard Monday’s trip. “We are in contact with their families and are providing assistance,” Boeing stated in a statement.
