Tehran Portrays The Deal with The US as a Win, But for Iranians it Was a Necessity

Iran’s leadership is attempting to sell its emerging memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States as the consequence of resistance and success, rather than retreat. This is not an easy case to make.

The country has recently seen a devastating war, the economy is under terrible strain, and segments of the Islamic Republic’s own support base have spent months condemning any compromise with Washington.

Some Iranians, both domestically and internationally, see the situation as an opportunity for regime change rather than diplomacy.

This is the split political landscape in which Tehran is currently attempting to sell the deal. Senior Iranian leaders have characterized the agreement as a success. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the Speaker of Parliament and the top Iranian official in the discussions, stated that Iran has taken a “long step toward final victory.”

President Masoud Pezeshkian has praised the agreement as potentially revolutionary, claiming that if properly implemented, it may address many of Iran’s problems and establish “a different world” in Iran and the Middle East.

Qalibaf’s position is noteworthy because he is not associated with Pezeshkian’s moderate faction; his public support shows that the arrangement has the approval of more powerful sectors of the system, including the Islamic Republic Revolutionary Guards.
