Dettol, a British hygiene company, has issued an apology for a Chinese advertisement that it says was intended to expose sexism but ended up backfiring. A man searching for a mate who is “clean” and “not tainted by other men” opens the five-minute, micro-dramatic advertisement for a multifunctional disinfectant.
Late in the advertisement, a major twist occurs when his new girlfriend confronts him about his chauvinism and ends their relationship. The remedy for “toxic men [who] are just like bacteria” is then described as dettol.
The advertisement was meant to criticize gender stereotypes, but Dettol said that parts of it that later went viral online misrepresented its main point. The advertisement has since been taken down due to the reaction. We acknowledge that it has angered a lot of people, particularly women. In a statement released on Monday, Dettol said, “We take responsibility for any negligence in creating and reviewing the content of the advertisement.”
Additionally, the business promised to examine its content moderation procedures. But we are well aware that true protection also lies in safeguarding the dignity of every individual and their right to be treated equally.” Dettol stated that its founding goal was to “protect the health” of families.
