In the upcoming years, South Korea intends to invest over $1 trillion (£760 billion) to expand its chip manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. It is a component of the nation’s “Three Mega Projects,” which aim to create new data centers, robotics technology, and chip-fabrication hubs.
President Lee Jae-myung stated on Monday that the initiative is intended to revitalize the economies of regions outside of Seoul. As the need for semiconductors rises due to the AI boom, regional rivals like Taiwan, China, and Japan are making significant investments in chip plants and other technology.”We need to secure the fundamental components of AI more quickly than any other nation,” Lee stated. “Semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centres are the triple axis for a great leap forward.”
The leaders of the two biggest chipmakers in the nation, Samsung and SK Hynix, joined Lee in announcing the intentions at a televised event. In the southwest of the nation, the corporations plan to construct a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. The majority of the nation’s cutting-edge factories are now located in Seoul, but Lee also revealed plans to build additional AI infrastructure hubs outside the city.
