A Shooter in a Child Custody Battle Kills six People at a Family Shelter in Northern German, According to Authorities

A gunman killed four women and two men on Monday at a German mother-and-child shelter, according to police, who said the suspect was fighting for custody of his three-month-old daughter. Emergency personnel hurried to the scene of the shooting in the northern town of Stade, where four persons had already died. A fifth person died at the spot, while a sixth died later from their injuries.

The culprit scheduled an appointment today, along with many of the victims, to discuss future parenting arrangements for his three-month-old baby,” said Kathrin Schuol, Lüneburg’s police chief, who is overseeing the inquiry. The accused gunman attempted to flee in a car driven by a 65-year-old woman with “a close connection to the gunman’s family,” but was apprehended after a brief chase, Schuol said.

Police fired on the car, but neither the suspected gunman nor the driver were injured, she said. Both are currently in police custody. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz termed the shooting “deeply shocking.” Merz stated that many people have died or been harmed while attempting to help and protect others. “My thoughts are with the victims and their families.
