Heatwaves in Europe are nothing new to 36-year-old Steven Scholtysek. Since his early years, the German engineer has experienced intense summers. However, the heat has been particularly intolerable this year. June was the hottest June on record in Western Europe, with temperatures rising beyond 40C (104F) in several German towns. Before the summer ends, the area is preparing for additional heatwaves.
Scholtysek moved into an attic flat a few months ago, which is known for overheating, which exacerbates the situation.According to Scholtysek, who resides in the town of Hamelin in north-central Germany, “it’s impossible to live a normal life in those flats, below the roof, in summer heat.”
He soon came onto a portable split air conditioner manufactured by the massive Chinese home appliance company Midea, which was created especially to comply with European requirements. His story is becoming more and more commonplace throughout Europe, a continent with generally low rates of air conditioner ownership.
Although air conditioners are used in homes from the US to Asia, most are incompatible with dwellings in Europe because they require drilling for installation. However, some of these more recent Chinese models comply with Europe’s stringent historic preservation regulations because they don’t. Now, an increasing number of Europeans are using air conditioners as heatwaves intensify. And the growing demand is being met by Chinese brands.
