As Canada’s trade dispute with the United States intensifies, Prime Minister Mark Carney states that “everything is on the table depending on the outcome of the negotiations”. Following the Trump administration’s announcement of new 50% tariffs on approximately C$20 billion in Canadian imports, Carney met with his provincial and territorial counterparts on Thursday to discuss a response.
Before the new US tariffs take effect on August 19, he said, trade negotiations with Washington are getting more intense. Some provincial leaders have urged Ottawa to take more aggressive action in trade discussions and to get results more quickly.
Carney stated that alternatives included supporting industries most vulnerable to tariffs and continuing to diversify trade outside of the US. He stated that “there’s a full range of things we can do in that regard” as a direct response, but he did not go into detail about possible sanctions.”We will fully support Canadian workers, families, and businesses,” he declared. Citing Canada’s unequal treatment of US cars, dairy, and alcohol, the US announced the new levies on Monday.
