The chairman of South Korea’s corporate giant SK Group has been ordered to pay his ex-wife 944bn won (£483m; $644m) in what local media has dubbed the “divorce of the century”. The award, which is still to be formalized, is less than the 1.38tn won ($1.1bn) the chairman Chey Tae-won was ordered to pay Roh in 2024.
It comes more than a decade after his marriage to Roh, the daughter of a former president, collapsed following news that he had fathered a child by another woman. SK Group owns SK Hynix, the chip titan that supplies chips to Nvidia and just had a record-breaking debut on the US stock market.
Chey’s lawyers claimed “Chairman Chey Tae-won is profoundly sorry that the proceedings [for divorce] thus far have caused anxiety to many people. “We are reviewing the verdict thoroughly and will give a precise reaction.
SK Group is a South Korean chaebol, one of a handful major family-owned businesses that dominate the country’s economy. The ruling follows deliberations on the partition of assets between Roh and Chey, who had been married for 35 years.
In an earlier trial in 2024, Roh’s legal team had argued successfully that Chey had been significantly aided by his ex-wife’s father Roh Tae-woo, who was president of the country between 1988 to 1993.
