At least five people were killed and several others were reported missing when an Indonesian ferry carrying 271 passengers caught fire in waters off the main island of Java on Sunday. Rescuers and passing vessels removed hundreds of people from the flaming ship, according to officials.
According to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, or Basarnas, the fire started between 6 a.m. (7 p.m. ET) and 7 a.m. (8 p.m. ET) in waters off Sumenep regency while the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry, carrying 232 passengers and 39 crew members, was sailing from the country’s second-largest city, Surabaya in East Java, to the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi.
About an hour later, according to a statement from Basarnas, the ferry operator, PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, reported the event to the Surabaya search and rescue office. It stated that the skipper of the ferry informed the firm that the ship was burning close to Madura Island’s northern edge, but communication was thereafter lost.
The ferry was located approximately 19 nautical miles north of Buruan Sapudi Island by 9:45 a.m. (10:45 p.m. ET), according to authorities who communicated with the nearby cargo ship Meratus Project 3, which was unable to get close to the blazing vessel due to its flammable load.
