In eastern Japan, record rainfall battered the Chiba prefecture, which is close to Tokyo, resulting in at least six fatalities and five injuries. Over 20,000 homes lost electricity due to the “unprecedented” rainfall, while 7,000 tourists were stuck at Tokyo’s Narita airport overnight.
On Thursday, local authorities issued their highest alert, a level five emergency warning. By Friday morning, this had been decreased to a level four, although the risks of flooding and landslides are still being warned.
In what is predicted to be an exceptionally active typhoon season, a string of storms slammed thru Japan and its neighbouring countries this week, causing the deluge. The most recent flood, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, was caused by warm, humid air entering the country’s east and combining with cold air above to create exceptionally unstable atmospheric conditions.
It is predicted that the rain will continue until late on Friday. Even by Japan’s historical weather standards, this event was incredibly exceptional, Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai told reporters Friday morning.
