Two explosions at an army camp in Bolivia on Friday resulted in at least two fatalities and 81 injuries, according to authorities. The strong explosions happened at the RAM-2 “Bolívar” General Maintenance Center in Viacha, southwest of the administrative capital La Paz, according to Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano.
Justiniano claims that the location was used to store “pyrotechnic material. No weaponry of any kind was detonated during the event, he continued. He informed reporters that seven people were still unaccounted for. The most important thing tonight is to protect people, attend to the injured, continue the search for those who have not yet been located, and ensure that families can return to their homes only when conditions are safe,” he said.
A massive explosion and a column of smoke rising into the air can be seen in footage that is making the rounds on social media and seems to catch one of the explosions. According to Justiniano, the first explosion “involved black powder from pyrotechnic material stored at the site,” while the second, “much larger” explosion was still under investigation.
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz sent his “deepest sympathy” to the families of the blast victims and injured in a post on X.Additionally, I have mandated a comprehensive, technical, and open examination into what transpired,” he stated. “We must establish with absolute clarity the causes of this incident, verify compliance with safety protocols, and determine who is responsible” .
