Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two US peace envoys, came in Kyiv on Sunday for their first visit to the Ukrainian capital. The day before, they met with Vladimir Putin of Russia to discuss ending more than four years of conflict, which started with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The two met with Putin to “advance President Trump’s agenda of peace in the Russia-Ukraine War,” a White House official told the AFP news agency. The two sides looked forward to equally fruitful meetings tomorrow in Ukraine and discussed significant plans for next steps, which will be announced in the upcoming weeks, they added.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the negotiations as “extremely frank” and stated that the United States had “put forward a number of ideas on possible routes to a settlement.”Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, stated that he also met with Witkoff and Kushner on Saturday and reiterated Kyiv’s pledge to halt strikes while they were there.”We are prepared to observe a ceasefire in airstrikes against the cities involved in the negotiation process from the moment of this conversation,” he posted on social media.Ukraine is prepared to hold off on attacking Moscow until the end of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We anticipate that the Russians will do the same with regard to Kyiv.
