Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is expected to run for reelection in 2019.The world football governing organization said in a statement that was picked up by several media: “The Fifa president declared in April that he will run for re-election in 2027. Nothing has changed, of course. Mr. Infantino intends to run for reelection.
Since FIFA unveiled a highly contentious private investment plan in late July that would have invited outside investors to purchase shares in a commercial subsidiary known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), Infantino, who was first elected president in 2016, has been under intense pressure.
Many in the football community fiercely opposed the proposal, accusing FIFA of trying to “sell” the game. World football soon saw a significant rift over Infantino’s tenure as head of the governing body, with individual countries and regional confederations disagreeing on whether or not he should stay.
After UEFA announced that it had obtained “assurances” that the FFE plan had been “irrevocably and permanently withdrawn” and that it “will not re-appear in any other shape, construction, name or form,” European countries dropped their threat to boycott FIFA tournaments in August.
