A Socialist Senator and a Pro-Trump Opponent Square Battle in Colombia’s Presidential Runoff

After Sunday’s vote failed to yield a clear winner, Colombia’s presidential election will go to a runoff on June 21 between a leftist and a right-wing candidate on opposing sides of the political spectrum.

Abelardo de la Espriella, a right-wing supporter of Donald Trump, won the most votes, closely followed by Iván Cepeda, a left-wing senator and current president Gustavo Petro’s buddy. Drone strikes, kidnappings, killings, and the assassination of a presidential contender at a rally last year were just a few of the violent incidents that marred the campaign.

The two men have different ideas on how to resolve the violent internal armed war in Colombia, which has been going on for decades but has just resurfaced. Neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote on Sunday to secure an absolute victory.

Although polls predicted that Cepeda would defeat his right-wing opponent, official results revealed that he was behind, with 41% of the vote to De La Espriella’s 43.7%, with nearly all votes counted. De La Espriella called the outcome a “triumph for those of us who have never experienced living off the state’s teat” and declared that he will “defeat tyranny, absolutism” in the runoff.
