Later on Tuesday, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham will have his first encounter with US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York. The continuing tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine will probably dominate their talk.
Burnham is anticipated to push Trump to provide Ukraine additional interceptor missiles and to talk about methods to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has largely been closed since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in February. Burnham is “a nice guy,” according to Trump. In his former position as Greater Manchester mayor, Burnham had declared that Trump was not welcome in the city and that he would not meet him.
Burnham has stated since taking office as prime minister that he will look for “common ground” with President Trump and handle the US-UK relationship pragmatically. Trump has recently made a number of remarks that the UK government finds difficult, such as endorsing Irish unity and raising concerns about the future of the Falkland Islands, a British-governed territory that Argentina disputes.
