Top US and Chinese officials have discussed developing a new “notification mechanism” for AI mishaps that could jeopardise national security, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters Sunday.
Bessent made the remarks following what he described as “successful” talks with Chinese Vise Premier He Lifeng in New York. The encounter occurred as US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping prepare for a summit in Washington later this week.
Recently, scholars and industry leaders have raised concerns about the possible hazards of AI and urged developers to exercise caution.We believe that, like with any cross-border activity, shifting from opaque to more transparent communication between the world’s top two AI powers is critical,” Bessent told reporters following the talks. He stated that the discussion also examined other matters, such as efforts to “operationalize” the Board of Trade, a procedure for identifying prospective tariff decreases on imports.
