UK Under Pressure to Justify Sanctions Decision as EU Vows to Hold hard on Russia

The European Union has pledged to continue its strategy of squeezing Russia’s military economy, while the United Kingdom is struggling to convince its allies that its recent moves are not the end of sanctions.

On Tuesday the British government generated confusion and dismay by issuing an open-ended permit enabling the import of diesel and jet fuel derived from Russian crude in other countries, such as Turkey and India, where the oil is bought at discounted costs.

Separately, a licence allows short-term servicing contracts for Russia’s Sakhalin-2 and Yamal LNG plants until January 2027. Ukraine and its European allies were blindsided by the disclosure

The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was in “very active communication” with British colleagues to clarify the decision details. “The concern was about ‘additional revenues’ that could go to Moscow’s budget”, said Vladyslav Vlasiuk, an envoy for sanctions from Zelenskyy. ”

The European Commission in Brussels was adamant the bloc would stay the course it is on. The Commission’s chief spokesperson, Paula Pinho, said on Wednesday: “We stick to our sanctions on imports of Russian oil and gas. “We have to reiterate the appeal to the Russians not to take advantage of the current conflict in the Middle East. “It’s too ironic.
