The Democratic Rally Won the Cyprus Election as the far Right and Newcomers Gained Ground

In Cyprus’s parliamentary election, the center-right Democratic Rally won 27.2% of the vote and seventeen seats in the legislature. The final results show that the left-wing AKEL came in second place, receiving 23.9% of the vote to secure 16 seats.

Beyond the conventional duopoly, the far-right ELAM made a historic breakthrough by rising to third place overall, winning 10.9% of the vote and eight seats. The centrist Democratic Party finished fourth with exactly 10%, gaining them eight seats. This year’s election included 752 candidates, with 743 representing more than 18 party formations and 9 running as independents. The process resulted in the election of 56 out of 80 House members.

Since 1963, the 24 seats allotted to Turkish Cypriots have been vacant as they withdrew from the Republic of Cyprus’ institutions, leaving the House of Representatives with a de facto total of 56 seats.

Along with the conventional parties DISY, AKEL, DIKO, EDEK, and DIPA, new political formations ran in the election, attempting to harness dissatisfaction with the existing political system. ALMA – Citizens for Cyprus, led by former Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides, Volt Cyprus, and MEP Fidias Panayiotou’s ‘Direct Democracy’ all drew attention.
