US President Donald Trump stated Sunday that he had urged representatives not to hurry into a deal with Iran, hours after declaring an agreement had been ‘basically reached’, sparking media anticipation about an announcement.
According to media sources, if the deal is reached, it will stop the conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and require Iran to hand over its highly enriched uranium stockpile. Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “constructive” conversations were begun, but that “both sides must take their time and get it right”.
According to Trump, discussions were “proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner” and the relationship with Iran was becoming “much more professional and productive” He pushed back against criticism from some fellow Republicans who want a stronger stance on Iran, despite the fact that both parties appear to be close to reaching an agreement in recent weeks.
The reopening of the strait would alleviate a global energy crisis caused by the US and Israeli bombing of Iran on February 28, which forced Tehran to effectively seal the canal. Since then, prices for oil, gas, and associated items have skyrocketed, and experts warn that if the strait reopens, shipping and pricing will take several weeks, if not months, to recover.
