An EasyJet flight heading for the UK was diverted to Rome when a power bank was discovered charging in a passenger’s luggage, according to reports. Flight EZY2618 from Hurghada, Egypt, to London Luton landed in the Italian city on Tuesday night as a “precaution”.
The airline stated that the captain decided to divert “in accordance with safety regulations” after a passenger told the crew during the flight that the portable charger was in the aircraft’s hold. Many airlines have tightened their rules on power banks, typically requiring them to be stored in hand luggage due to the risk of lithium-ion batteries catching fire.
The flight landed safely at Rome Fiumicino and was rescheduled for Wednesday. FlightRadar24 data shows the jet flying at 36,000 feet when, about three hours into its voyage over the Adriatic Sea, it made an abrupt left turn and landed 20 minutes later.
It is understood that there was no problem with the power bank, however regulations prohibit power banks from charging in the hold during a flight. A representative for the airline stated, “The aircraft landed safely, passengers exited normally, and we supplied hotel accommodations and meals when available. Customers who remained in the airport were given complimentary refreshments.
