In a Rare Trip to North Korea, Xi Jinping Will Meet Kim Jong Un

According to both nations’ official media, China’s president Xi Jinping will visit North Korea next week for the first time in almost seven years to meet Kim Jong Un. At Kim’s request, Xi will visit North Korea on June 8 and 9. 2019 was Xi’s most recent trip to Pyongyang.

The visit takes place a few weeks after Xi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Beijing, two nations that have a significant influence on Pyongyang’s foreign policy.

North Korea, which is subject to extensive international sanctions due to its nuclear weapons program and alleged human rights violations, has China as a major political and economic ally. North Korea and China have a 1,400-kilometre border, and the only defence agreement China has with another nation. In the event that either is attacked, it ensures mutual support.

The treaty’s 65th anniversary is this year. The propaganda significance of Xi’s visit is obvious to Kim. After surviving the epidemic and joining Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, North Korea’s reputation on the international scene has improved. Xi is concerned about the growing partnership between Kim and Putin, despite Beijing’s strong links to both Moscow and Pyongyang.
