The Philippines has temporarily barred the gaming app Gorebox after an initial inquiry revealed that a teen suspect in a rare school shooting was playing the game. Three children were killed and 20 others were injured when two suspects, aged 15 and 14, allegedly discharged handguns inside a classroom in Tacloban, south-east of Manila, on Monday.
According to the Google Play listing, the 14-year-old played Gorebox, a game that allows users to “obliterate anything [they] desire” and engage in savage warfare with a vast arsenal of weapons and explosives.The country’s cyber-security organization emphasized the importance of considering potential internet impacts in the unfortunate tragedy.Aboy Paraiso, an undersecretary at the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Centre, said that temporarily suspending the game would allow police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into whether the platform played any role in the suspects’ acts.
Gorebox is a first-person shooter video game that may be played solo or in online multiplayer. The International Age Rating Coalition rated it R18 owing to its excessively violent, explicit, and unrestricted gameplay.
