Austria Hits a Heat Record as all Major Italian Towns are Under red Alert Due to the European Heatwave

As a scorching heatwave engulfed Europe on Thursday, setting a national temperature record in Austria, igniting wildfires in France, and interfering with electricity and transportation systems throughout the continent, Italy issued the highest heat alert for all of its major cities. Millions of people have received health warnings as a result of the extreme weather, which has caused temperatures in some nations to rise above 40C.

Authorities around Europe are dealing with the effects of the intense heat, including health advisories for millions of people in Italy, record temperatures in Austria, interruptions to energy and transportation due to the drought in Central Europe, and wildfires that are spreading from France to the Balkans. Officials and scientists caution that as the temperature warms, these occurrences are growing more common and severe.

Prolonged heat, dryness, and wildfire conditions are becoming summertime hallmarks from the Mediterranean to Central Europe.

Vulnerabilities in public health systems, power generation, transportation networks, and tourism infrastructure have been revealed by the current heatwave, compelling businesses and governments to prepare for more frequent extreme weather events.

For the first time this year, the entire network has been under the highest warning level at the same time. On Thursday, the Health Ministry of Italy put all 27 cities under its national heat surveillance system on red alert.
