The Cypriot natural gas currently under development might begin to flow to Europe as early as the spring of 2028, according to Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Michalis Damianos. This would help stabilize prices and increase the continent’s energy independence.
He also mentioned the most recent developments with the French company Meridiam’s admission and Cyprus’s electrical link with Greece, which came about as a result of French President Emmanuel Macron’s persistent interest. According to the island nation’s energy minister, European consumers can anticipate natural gas from an underwater field off Cyprus to assist satisfy their energy needs as soon as March 2028.
According to Michalis Damianos, as the Middle East’s unrest and Russia’s conflict in Ukraine compel the continent to look for new energy sources, the Eastern Mediterranean is quickly becoming a viable alternative.
According to Damianos, partners TotalEnergies of France and Eni of Italy made the final investment decision last month to proceed with the development of the “Cronos” gas field off the southern coast of Cyprus. Gas from Eastern Mediterranean fields will be supplied to European markets for the first time thanks to this initiative.
