Firefighters are fighting large fires in Belgium, Germany, France, Croatia, Spain, and Greece under ongoing hot and dry weather as wildfires continue to rage throughout much of Europe. In just one day, a fire in Belgium’s High Fens nature reserve has grown to almost 3,000 hectares, more than doubling in size. Since it began two days ago, the fire has grown to be the biggest wildfire in Belgian history.
More than 250 firefighters and other emergency service personnel were sent on Saturday nite, according to authorities in the nation’s Wallonia area. The reserve’s vast peatlands and pine forests, which have been dehydrated by extended hot weather, make it especially susceptible to wildfires.
Belgium’s unified defence force announced on social media that it has dispatched vehicles and personnel to assist firefighters. The fire is moving toward the German border, and firefighters from Luxembourg and adjacent Germany have also been dispatched to help contain it. Farmers in the area have also helped put out the fire. Three helicopters and two water-bombing aircraft from Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic arrived after Belgium triggered the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on Saturday.
