Amid growing public concerns about the hazards, the head of OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, argues people should have more faith in AI companies to keep the technology secure. At a conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Sam Altman stated, “The world should trust that we are going to do the right thing because it’s the right thing and we feel the magnitude of this.”
He acknowledged that people’s concerns about AI were warranted given how quickly the technology had advanced. However, detractors claim that businesses cannot be relied upon to self-regulate; among those advocating for more AI regulation are left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders and former US President Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon.
Trump has called concerns about the safety of AI a “hoax” and blasted proposals for additional regulations on the rapidly developing technology. He claimed that a “strong and smart” president was the only “guardrails” required for AI.
Altman made his remarks on Tuesday while speaking at a yearly conference organised by the software company Salesforce.”We can now see how this could go wrong with less imagination than we used to,” he remarked. “I think the world is right to be afraid of this.”
