At Least 12 People have Died as Spain Struggles to Contain one of its Deadliest Wildfires

Following one of the worst wildfires in the nation’s history, emergency personnel in southeast Spain are attempting to suppress pockets of flames. According to Spanish officials, 12 people have died in the town of Bedar, including four Britons, and hundreds of firefighters and other experts have been sent there. There are still 23 persons unaccounted for.

Local authorities in Almería’s Los Gallardos neighborhood have issued a warning that the death toll may increase due to concerns that more Britons may have been slain. Wildfires have occurred throughout Southern Europe this summer due to a prolonged heatwave with temperatures of about 40C (104F), especially in France, Portugal, and Spain. The Los Gallardos fire spread swiftly on Thursday afternoon due to high temperatures, extremely dry ground, and strong winds.

Although a fallen power line has been identified as the fire’s source, local utility firms have denied this. Regarding the four individuals who were discovered deceased in a burned-out vehicle, no further details have been provided.
