This past weekend, US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sat together in New Jersey for the World Cup final, marking the conclusion of a joint North American competition that has been mostly seen as a success despite complaints over ticket and travel expenses.
The US announced a new round of tariffs against one of its closest trading partners the next day, just hours after the two leaders were seen grinning and chatting inside the stadium. The unexpected action imposed a 50% tax on a variety of products, including synthetic wigs, candles, and hockey sticks.
However, according to pollster David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data, Canadians are now accustomed to weathering the storm. According to him, the majority of Canadians believe they cannot trust the Trump administration.
He added that “most people do not want Mark Carney to cave” and that there is still “deep anger” among many about what they see as unfair treatment from the US. That resolve is only likely to be strengthened by the most recent wave of tariffs imposed on Monday, which the US claimed was a reaction to Canada’s “unequal treatment” of US autos, dairy products, and alcohol.
