In a Rebuke to Trump Over Iran, the US House Moves to Limit his Military Powers

The United States House of Representatives passed legislation aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from pursuing further military action in Iran. The 215-208 vote was successful because four Republicans joined Democrats in a public display of opposition to the war, which began in February.

This is the fourth attempt by the House to rein in Trump’s war powers, which critics say lack congressional approval. The House measure still need approval from the Republican-controlled United States Senate. Even if it passes in the Senate, the bill is unlikely to significantly reduce military action against Iran.

The Senate advanced a similar resolution in May, after seven previous failed attempts, but it has yet to reach a full floor vote. The vote on Wednesday was the latest hint of divide within Trump’s Republican Party, coming just days after a conservative revolt in Congress forced his administration to withdraw plans for a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund for political supporters.

Republicans Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson voted in favor of Wednesday’s resolution alongside Democrats. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine, who had previously opposed identical proposals, supported them this time.
