Meta and a US School District Reach a Settlement in a Social Media Addiction Dispute

A US school district that had sued the owner of Instagram over the expenses of addressing a mental health crisis purportedly brought on by the company’s social media platforms has reached a settlement with Meta.

Kentucky’s Breathitt School District was about to file the first lawsuit to force social media corporations to pay for those expenses. Last week, the school district reached a settlement with three other defendants in the same case: Google’s YouTube, TikTok, and Snap Inc.A representative for Meta stated on Thursday that “we’ve resolved this case amicably,” allowing the company to avoid presenting a defense at this trial, despite similar cases are still scheduled for trial in the near future.

Over a thousand US school districts have filed lawsuits against social media corporations, and Breathitt County School District’s case was selected as a test case. According to the school district, the firms purposefully made their platforms addicting, which led to negative outcomes like anxiety, despair, and self-harm.

It was requesting an abatement program and $60 million (£44.7 million) in damages to combat the effects of social media on kids. Additionally, the district requested that the businesses modify their platforms’ purported addictive qualities.
