Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Tuesday that Spain is starting to see “light at the end of the tunnel” in its fight against the big wildfires that are still raging across the nation, while he warned that the coming hours would be difficult.
Speaking at his annual press conference before the summer break, Sánchez slammed climate denialism, calling it “the worst possible fuel for tackling the climate emergency; it makes us much more vulnerable”. He stressed that finding a cross-party agreement on climate was “an imperative, not an option”
Sánchez urged extreme caution as Spain faces rising temperatures and a new heatwave forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which is expected to complicate firefighting and increase the risk of wildfires across much of the country. Although some of the main flames are improving, Sánchez said now is not the time to relax safeguards.
Firefighters are treating the fires in Ávila, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and Villa del Prado, Madrid, as a single major fire due to their merging fronts. The situation continues to have a significant impact on local communities.
