Andy Burnham, the new prime minister of the United Kingdom, promised political stability following years of turmoil in his first speech outside Downing Street. He also pledged to continue supporting Ukraine and address the cost-of-living problem that has put pressure on households nationwide.
Burnham, who succeeded Keir Starmer to become Britain’s seventh prime minister in ten years, declared that his administration would strive to bring “hope” and “national renewal” in order to rebuild public trust in politics.
He claimed that Britain required a “circuit-breaker” after decades of political and economic decay, and he promised to present a ten-year plan to reconstruct the nation. Shortly after being chosen by King Charles III to succeed Keir Starmer, Burnham declared, “Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again.
He promised to “issue my first instruction to end rough sleeping in our country” as soon as he began working. In contrast to earlier Labour leadership races, Burnham campaigned unchallenged and entered Downing Street without having to explain his agenda in broadcast debates or party hustings. Opponents blamed him for avoiding a thorough examination of his domestic agenda and failing to explain how he would finance many of his goals.
