As a Forest Fire Threatens Beaches in Northern Greece, Hundreds of Visitors Will be Rescued by Boat

According to the fire department, about 150 firefighters, water bombing planes, and helicopters fought the flames that were spreading throughout the Halkidiki peninsula south of Thessaloniki. According to the service, two injured firefighters were sent to the hospital.

The homes around the well-known resorts of Siviri and Fourka, which are crowded with summer visitors, were destroyed by the fire within hours of it starting. Flammable pine forests predominate in the area.

Additionally, 15 small boats that were brought into duty for the emergency were used to evacuate around 250 tourists in bathing costumes—many of them with children in their arms—by sea, according to ERT public television. The evacuation had to go by boat because the flames were approaching the beaches, according to a fire department spokeswoman.

Images from ERT showed dozens waiting to escape on a pontoon at Fourka as smoke obscured the sky over the resorts. Winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour (60 miles per hour) are expected on Friday, according to weather forecasts. Every year, wildfires devastate Greece, and experts claim that the risk is increasing due to human-caused climate change, which has intensified droughts and other weather events.
