According to authorities, two teenage attackers fatally shot three men at a mosque in San Diego, California, in a suspected hate crime before killing themselves. The shooting occurred on Monday morning, two hours after the mother of one of the suspects called police to report that her son had run away with a friend and was perhaps suicidal.
Police were already looking for the two when the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego began, and they discovered three casualties with gunshot wounds outside the building. Shortly later, they received another call reporting that shots had been fired close from a vehicle at a landscaper. Officers discovered the suspects, ages 17 and 18, dead of self-inflicted wounds in a vehicle blocks away from the mosque.
According to police, one of the victims was a security guard at the center who “played a pivotal role” in preventing the incident from being more severe.”It’s fair to say his actions were heroic,” San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said during a news conference. “Undoubtedly, he saved lives today.” Authorities have yet to identify the three fatalities by name. However, the security guard was a father of eight, according to a source who spoke with the BBC’s US partner CBS.
