Starbucks Korea Fires CEO Over Tense ‘Tank Day’ Push

Starbucks Korea’s CEO has been fired after a marketing that was interpreted as referencing a bloody historical occurrence. The “Tank Day” coffee tumbler promotion, which began on Monday, the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising suppression, triggered demands to boycott Starbucks Korea and drew a scathing censure from President Lee Jae Myung.

Many others believed the “tank” theme referred to vehicles used by the military administration in May 1980 to repress pro-democracy protestors. Starbucks Korea rolled back the offer hours after it began. Shinsegae, the company that controls the majority share in the coffee chain, has apologised for “inappropriate marketing” and removed CEO Sohn Jeong-hyun.

The promotion, known as Tank Day in English, was for their Tank Series drink tumblers, which were advertised as having “spacious volume” for a huge amount of coffee. Starbucks Korea explained that the Tank Series tumbler was part of a larger campaign from May 15 to 26.We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern caused to our consumers as a result of this,” the business stated. “We have immediately suspended the event and will review and improve our internal processes to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
