Italy is Experiencing an Increasing Water Scarcity, and Switzerland Steps in as Lake Maggiore Runs Low

In order to support Lake Maggiore, Switzerland is turning on the faucet on Lake Lugano. More water will be released from the Ceresio toward Ponte Tresa in order to support the level of Lake Maggiore and, most importantly, ensure supplies for the rice fields on the plain. This is an emergency solution that, more than any set of numbers, demonstrates how delicate the water situation in northern Italy has become. The present 3 cubic meters per second will increase to 8 cubic meters per second. Because the two lakes are connected, Lake Maggiore will get a large portion of the additional water.

Based on information from the Po River Basin Authority, the Ministry of the Environment called an urgent meeting of the Italian-Swiss Bilateral Consultation Body to discuss the regulation of Lake Maggiore’s levels and the management of water resources in its basin. The Swiss proposal, which could be put into effect as soon as today, was approved by the Italian group, which was composed of ministry members as well as regional authorities from Lombardy and Piedmont.
