Relieved, Europeans Leave the G7, Striking a Balance Between Flattery and Self-Interest to Restrain Trump

Emmanuel Macron praised what he called a “objectively successful” G7 meeting as it came to an end on Wednesday following three days of high-stakes diplomacy, citing a joint statement signed by all leaders, including US President Donald Trump. There had been much conjecture in the weeks preceding the summit that President Trump would either leave early or not attend at all.

Additionally, French diplomats were concerned about potential conflicts, diplomatic blunders, and a lack of cohesion that could have made the G7 arrangement ineffective on the international stage. Trump had left the meeting early when conflict broke out between Iran and Israel a year prior in Canada. While US tariffs on allies increased uncertainty and unsettled EU partners, the Canadian G7 had also failed to reach consensus on important topics.

French diplomats emphasized a summit that produced the desired result this time. At a press conference following the summit, President Macron went one step further and told reporters that the Évian gathering was a turning moment. He told reporters, “This is a significant shift from the previous several months, not only for Europeans but also for G7 countries. Leaders agreed on a joint statement early on Wednesday, stating that they “stood united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
